W I S H

We can use the verb wish in the present, past and future tense.

Wishes about the present
1. We use wish + past simple to express that we want a situation in the present to be different.
Examples:
I wish I spoke Italian.
I wish I had a bigger car.
I wish I was on a beach.

2. We use wish + past continuous to express that we want to be doing a different action in the present.
Examples:
I wish I was lying on a beach now.
I wish it wasn't raining.
I wish you weren't leaving.

Wishes about the past
We use wish + past perfect to express a regret, or that we want a situation in the past to be different.
Examples:
I wish I hadn't eaten so much.
I wish they had come on holiday with us.
I wish I had studied harder at school.

Wishes about the future
We use wish + would/could + infinitive to criticize, complain or suggest.
Examples:
I wish you would stop smoking.
I wish it would stop raining.
I wish she would be quiet.
