Final Review: A230A
YOU MUST READ THE CHAPTERS. DO NOT DEPEND ON THIS REVIEW!

Percy Shelley:
• Tone differs from Wordsworth. Shifting rather than stable.
• Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s role in editing his work—the airy air Shelley.
• Political works- Shelley as a Radical intellectual.
• The role of the Romantic poet& message.
• Odes- poems of direct address.
• ‘To A Skylark’ and ‘Ode to the West Wind’- similar in their direct addressing of nature. The poet longs to be a part of nature and wishes we could learn from nature.
• ‘To A Skylark’ the theme of mortality vs immortality.
• ‘Ode to the West Wind’ also could be seen as revolutionary—“new birth.”
• Context: political & economic conditions —events that took place in England 1819 leading to turbulence.
• ‘Sonnet: England in 1819’, ‘Mask of Anarchy’, and ‘To the Lord Chancellor’: all personal and political. ‘Mask of Anarchy’ uses a narrative form, personifies man’s sins, and it is a Broadsheet Ballad. Refer to the poems for more analysis.
• ‘Ozymandias’ and ‘Written on Hearing the News of the Death of Napoleon’: both are historical.
• The role of the poet and poetic message.
• ‘Mont Blanc’: the sublime and its effect on the poet. The grandeur of nature and the response of the human mind.

Thomas De Quincey:
• DEBASEMENT of literature accelerated *pg 73 and Professionalised Production of literature. He wrote for The London Magazine. Confessions of an English Opium Eater appeared in two installments
• The function of the tale is to be instructive, scientific, and provide the reader with a moral. Emphasis on the reader.
• Autobiographical and constructed persona of the Opium-Eater.
• Characterization of the Opium-Eater and his work.
• The opium as the “True hero of the tale”
• Characteristics of the opium. Refer to chapter.
• Pleasures of opium: theatre going &walking in the streets.
• The Style: long sentences, confusing, commas, colons, semicolons, the voice is grandiose, the vocab is of extreme emotions “groans” “sighs” “tears” – there are rhetorical strategies too- to engage an audience that gets bored easily. Switches between the humorous, the sad, the satiric, the teasing, and the sublime.
• De Quincey’s ‘Impassioned Prose’
• Pain of opium. Withdrawal symptoms
• The Malay incident. Significance.
• The idea of the self and the continuity/discontinuity of the self. Compare to Wordsworth’s construction of the Romantic self.
• The mechanisms of memory. For WW it is “spots of time” for De Quincey it is “INVOLUTES” – experiences that preserve emotion, but they are dreams and nightmares in his work. Pg 86 for more.
• Unstable sense of self. The self breaks down.
• STRUCTURE: subdivisions, headings, signposts, flashforward and flashback, repetition of events, confusing structure. It is divided into six sections in two diff parts, part 1 and 2. Pg 88 for more.
• Critic Grevel Lindop argues that the piece is like the FALL in the BIBLICAL story. Opium serves as a modern version of the apple- loss of innocence.
• Opium as a commodity but also the “secret of happiness”
• Visionary Addiction, unlike Wordsworth. Rethinking Romantic self& autobiography. Pg.86&96

E.T.A. Hoffman:
• German Romanticism. Read Intro 101-103
• Literary Tales: Fantasy pieces and night pieces
• Juxtaposes Fantasy with Reality
• the use of gothic elements in fantasy tales
• Childhood traumatic memory and adulthood.
• Memory: the adult Nathanael’s assessment of childhood memories vs Wordsworth’s in the Prelude. *the discussion of activity 3
• Three narrators: multiple voices, multiple truths. The third is the fictionalized authorial persona of Hoffman
• The self is unstable, imagination gone out of control- similarly to DQ.
• Eyes, vision, and the fear of their loss- important themes. Ways of SEEING the world
• The dark side of the Romantic author’s imagination.
• Clara and Olimpia differences and similarities.
• They both are products of masculine creative projects.
• CLARA – agency/active voice : Olimpia- voiceless and Passive. She is seen.
• Clara SEES. Clara brings him back to reality, that is her role, and olimpia indulges his extremes of fantasy. CLARA is about rationality. Olimpia is about his idealistic vision his creative but DELUDED vision- she is a mechanical doll.
• Freud: the uncanny. Psychoanalysis of Nathaniel and his stunted growth
• Trauma and Romantic subjectivity pg 113
• Hoffman’s stories are open-ended and there is no sense of closure.
