Section B
You should attempt four out the six questions, writing your answers in the spaces provided .

21. The idea that motivation is driven by certain needs was taken forward by "Maslow". Describe the five categories of need he suggested with the help of examples. And give a critic of his theory.
2. Maslow(1954 ) developed the idea of a Hierarchy of needs:

A motivation theory which explains that individuals are driven by a desire to satisfy a range of needs .These form a hierarchy of five categories & the suggestion is that unless lower level needs are satisfied first, higher level ones cannot be satisfied.

Maslow hierarchy from a basic level upwards is:
1.Physiological needs: food, drinks and shelter.
1. Safety needs: protection against danger &threat.
2. Social needs: love, affection and acceptance as part of a social group.
3. Esteem needs: to have high self-esteem and the respect of others (prestige, status).
4. Self-actualization needs: to realize our potential and develop skills, to become what we believe we are capable of becoming.

One of implications of Maslow theory is that the higher-order needs for esteem and self-actualization provide the greatest motivation because they grow in strength after the other are satisfied .The lower order needs weaken once they satisfied.

Table 3.1 simple pre******ions based on a hierarchy of needs. [page – 53]

Masslow needs hierarchy has been criticized:
First: it is rigid: people may have different priorities at different times; they may not move from one level to another but have all levels of needs simultaneously.
Second: it may tell us more about the (male) values of Western societies than the truth about individuals' innate needs.

22. Identify the "Management by Objectives Approach' (MBO). And talk briefly about the objectives or targets it relies on.
management by objectives (MBO):
- The essence of MBO is that instead of telling people exactly how to do their work, managers provide staffs with tasks and assignments which have targets or objectives to be reached.
- These objectives provides a clear set of standards against which to measure an employee's progress.
- MBO relies on objectives or targets being:
1- Challenging.
2- Attainable.
3- Subject to measurement.
4- Relevant.
- MBO implies that all objectives can be quantified or measured
- MBO is useful for negotiating with staff what will be achieved and placing this within an explicit framework.
Problems with the MBO:
1- Objectives may be set too high or too low.
2- Employees may feel guilty if they fail to reach targets.

23. Analyze and explain the culture and of meetings using examples where possible.
In any organization, meetings are an integral part of the work that act as communication with others, and The culture and style of these meetings are have significant role to success and achieve goals of work. Moreover they differ from one organization to another according to its nature and the goals of participants. We can analyze the culture and style of meetings into two dimensions:
1. adversarial-consensual axis. 2. Formal-informal axis

These dimensions fit according to the organizations structure and goals.
Formal- adversarial meetings:
- Large, traditional meetings and working parties typical of bureaucracies.
- Formal terms of reference, formal procedure and formal rules.
- These meetings depend on sophisticated knowledge of rules and procedures, good analysis of political maneuvering and hidden agendas.
Formal- consensual meetings:
- Common style of most business meetings, such as successful voluntary organizations.
- The degree of consensus and formality may vary from one organization to another.
- May there is a facilitator instead of chairperson, and formal agenda may replaced by round robins or buzz groups.
- The atmosphere of the meeting is more relaxed, built in conflict and great concern with participation and enjoyment.
Informal- consensual meetings:
- Less formal meeting such as small working groups and planning meetings, and supervision and support groups often work well without much formal paraphernalia if there is underlying agreement and trust.
Informal-adversarial meetings:
- Inherently unstable.
- Informal structures and power elites emerge.
- Such as plenary meetings of conferences.

24. Identify and explain the different types of Groups within Organizations. Give example of each type

1. Formal groups  Have some formal recognition and authority within the organization.
 Usually have a defined purpose related to its broad aims.
 Such as: work groups, project team, departments.

2. Informal groups  Do not have formal authority
 Individuals within organizations interact with people who may not be part of their formal group
 Such as:
1- they may form relationships with those people to pursue common interests
2- to make various exchanges
3- Form to fulfill needs and attain special goals
4- Form to pursue work-related interests

3. Primary groups  Are those whose members have regular and frequent interactions with each other.
 Such as:
1- Small work group.
2- Project team and a family.
- They usually have an important influence on their members' values, attitudes and beliefs.

4. Secondary groups
 Are those whose members interacts less frequently.
 Larger than primary groups.
 Large committees, professional bodies and associations are all examples.
 Their members do not have to opportunity to get to know each other well, so they are less cohesive than primary groups.

25. There are many different sources of power, or power bases, in organizations. What are they? Explain briefly each source and clarify how power can be obtained from each.

1. Position and authority:
- Authority: is the power vested in an individual or group by virtue of their role or position in an organization
The position that a person holds entitles them to do certain things such as:
 To give instructions to some people
 To authorizes expenditure
- In most organizations, position confers the authority to see that certain tasks and functions are performed.

2. Control of resources:
 All organizations depend on their continued existence on an adequate supply of resources such as money, personal, technology.
 Control these resources can be important sources of power both within and between organizations.
 The keys to resource power are dependence and scarcity.
 If the resources is not scare and you can obtain it elsewhere, then the other person’s power is diminished.
 If your managerial position enables you to allocate resources, you have real power.
 One way to reduce other people’s power is to reduce dependence on them for resources.

3. Social connections:
 The important of it is summed up by the saying “it’s not what you know but who you know that’s important”
 Your capacity to influence events will depend on your ability to gather information and mobilize resources and support.

4. Expertise:
 Expert power depends on relationship between the parties involved and on the context of their relationship
 Expertise is for many people the most acceptable source of power and the easiest to legitimize because it is effective only when it is recognized by those over whom it is exercised
 The two important resources of expertise are what we will call technical or product knowledge and process knowledge
 The technical knowledge: is knowledge about the product or service that the organization is trying to deliver
 Process knowledge: is knowledge about how to get things done with and through others.

5. Control of information:
 Information is vital in the control of organizations, without it you can not plan or make good decisions.
 Control of information is another important sources of power.
 People who occupy key positions in the information networks of organizations are often called gatekeepers, because they can control the flow of information.

6. Personal characteristics:
 Intelligence, confidence, friendless are qualities that may enhance your credibility and power in the eyes of others.
 People with these qualities are often said to have charisma.

اوكي ..اول شي رح نبلش ب Book 1 \session 1
الجزء الاول..

understanding behavior at work

There are two ways of looking at it

To understand behaviour you need

-to appreciate the point of view of the person involved, that is you need to understand the mental state of a person - why a person acted in a certain way

to perceive how it reflects social pressure, constraints and conventions, social - conventions create pressure on individuals to behave appropriately

-rationalist individualist view

the individuals is in charge of what they do and what it mean

-social expectations view

the individuals has feeling of being in charge but organizational life limits what they can and can't do

The individual in charge (rationalist individualist view)so..The individual is in charge of what they do – Huczynski & Buchanan said “ we behave as we do because we choose to do so – we human beings are proactive rather than reactive”;D

Conflict arises because individuals values and experience lead to people to view

the same events differently..Conflict arises because individuals values and experience lead to

people to view the same events differently.....Eden talked about mental models where you

view an event based on previous experience....People cannot help doing this since they need

to make life predictable, ordered and relatively understandable

لي عودة بعد قليل ...
