وعلى فكرة اسئلة الواجبات مهمه راح اضيفها ..

What is ment by invisible hand in market ?

Adam Smith introduce invisible hand as a ****phor for how markets work to co-ordinate the action of agents to the common good . He saw the price mechanism as the ivisible hand that allowed the market , without humen intervention , to co-ordinate the behavour of producers acting in their own self interest , in such a way that consumers needs were satisfied .

Weber and Facault have different perspective of power , discuss hoe does each one look at it ?

Weber :
(1) Those who have the power use it to achieve their objectives .
Facault :
(1) Power is not in any one hand , it`s not something obvious , it`s in our imaginations .

Weber
(2) In an institutional power is hierarchical top-down affair .
Facault
(2) Power circulates through their organization practices .

Weber :
(3) Obedience is something secured by people in authority .
Facault
(3) Compliance is not a straight-forward , it works best when every one accept power willingly .

How should natural hazard be explained ?
What are the uncertinties related to BSE ?
Discuss some aspect of contipory trends in family lives ?
What is ment by flexible work practisies ?

أسئلة الـ TMA3

1. Write a short note on how Darwins theory of evolution explains the differences and similarities between species.

2. Write a short note on IQ tests and describe criticisms against these tests.

IQ stands for " Intelligence Quotient" , means an age-related measure of intelligence .
The aim of IQ:
Discovering whether differences in intelligence are the result of differences in genetic inheritance.
Re******es have to choose characteristic which can easily be measured, and they only measure one kind of logical intelligence, the questions rely on knowledge of a particular language & culture, & IQ tests are not culture-free & children can be coached to improve performance on IQ tests so passing IQ tests, not general intelligence itself.
Selective placement by adopted agencies who tried nowadays to place most children with adoptive parents whose intellectual & educational level rough matches that of the birth mother what follows from this is that any similarity between children’s IQ & the IQ of their birth mothers may have been due to selective placement of their birth mother rather than being the result of genetic factors.
The Third point give a percentage of heredity suppose instead that children have wildly different experiences of life, any differences in performances would be interpreted as being due to the different environment, in this case, there would be a low estimate of the part played by genetic inheritance.
Genetic inheritance plays a role, in physical qualities like height & color of hair & eyes.
It is much more difficult to tease out the causes of a abilities like intelligence, in which heredity & social experience are intertwined.
It is possible intelligence depend on gender, class, culture, ethnicity & social experiences

3. Write a short note on market and explain its characteristics.

A market: comprises all the exchanges involving a certain type of commodity (often within a defined geographical area)
The world of commercial activity where goods and services are bought and sold.
A market consists of buyers & sellers that trade in its commodity , Markets also need trading rules & conventions to regulate the way agents interact these are social institutions that may vary between one market & another.
Markets also differ in the number & types of agents who trade in them
E.g.: telecommunications, only few large companies sell goods & services, whereas in others a myriad of sellers compete without even knowing of each other’s existence.
Markets in which there are many buyers & sellers are competitive. In such markets, no individual agent has much power & ‘ market forces ‘ determine prices .

Describe the stages of children cognitive development, and explain the role of nurture during these stages? (about 200 words).

Cognitive development means the development of intelligence and the ways in which children become aware of their environment and of the interactions of other people .
Piaget developed an interest in the intellectual development of children. Based upon his observations, he concluded that children were not less intelligent than adults, they simply think differently. Albert Einstein called Piaget’s discovery “so simple only a genius could have thought of it.”
Piaget’s stage theory describes the cognitive development of children. Cognitive development involves changes in cognitive process and abilities. In Piaget’s view, early cognitive development involves processes based upon actions and later progresses into changes in mental operations.
Characteristics of the Sensorimotor Stage: ( birth to about 2 years )
The first stage of Piaget’s theory lasts from birth to approximately age two and is centered on the infant trying to make sense of the world.
Children in this stage utilize skills and abilities they were born with, such as looking, sucking, grasping, and listening, to learn more about the environment.
Characteristics of the Preoperational Stage:
The preoperational stage occurs between ages two and seven . Language development is one of the hallmarks of this period.
Piaget noted that children in this stage do not yet understand the underlying logic, cannot mentally manipulate information, and are unable to take the point of view of other people, which he termed egocentrism.

Characteristics of Operational:
The operational stage begins around age seven and continues until approximately age twelve. During this time, children gain a better understanding of mental operations. Children begin thinking logically about underlying events, and understand other people's intentions and other points of view .
Characteristics of the Formal Operational Stage:

The formal operational stage begins at approximately age twelve to and lasts into adulthood. During this time, they develop the ability to think about abstract concepts and systems like mathematics , skills such as logical thought and deductive reasoning.

Explain how social science attempt to offer alternative explanations to natural disasters and how such explanations help in understanding human interaction? (about 200 words).

Internal and external processes of the earth system cause natural hazards, events that change or destroy human and wildlife habitats, damage property, and harm or kill humans. Natural hazards include earthquakes, landslides, wildfires, volcanic eruptions, floods, storms, and even possible impacts of asteroids.
Human activities also can induce hazards through resource acquisition, urban growth, land-use decisions, and waste disposal. Such activities can accelerate many natural changes.
Natural hazards can present personal and societal challenges because misidentifying the change or incorrectly estimating the rate and scale of change may result in either too little attention and significant human costs or too much cost for unneeded preventive measures.
As the environment agency sees ( natural causes ) thus , the agency makes a clear distinction between social agents and natural agents . Nature visits disorder upon society . Floods might be caused by other social activities lax or ignored regulations , system of land , removed trees , smooth surfaces that accompanied urbanization ploughed up hedges .. etc
Thus . the hazard has emerged from interactions between people and environments .
The report argues that a set of unusual atmospheric conditions produced a period & intensity of rainfall or which no one could have realistically been prepared. It suggests that flood defenses (for which remember, the Agency is responsible) are designed to cope with a certain level of river discharge. A part from blaming the freak weather conditions, there is a suggestion that the meteorologists underestimated the rainfall in their forecast; they failed to understand the weather in sufficient detail. When things go wrong, the ****** is on for someone or something to blame. Agent: is someone who or something that we believe has
shaped the events that we want to explain .
Blame cannot rest on the event itself. Causes (like the agricultural system. or the over-abstraction of water from rivers and groundwater) will be found before as well as during the flood.
The social scientists cannot identify guilty parties from the flow of social & natural activity and they cannot blame the weather for floods also cannot blame the regulatory agency.

In order to provide alternative explanations of natural hazards we need to look beyond the event in 2 ways :

1- events have histories : how , why ?
2- events have geographies : looking at interactions particular to a certain place where disaster occur and interactions that link one to other places .

Two cases of two risk events 2 ways of accounting for these risk events
Crisis in wall Street
Crisis in central America
The two risk events were produced through markets . They produce vulnerabilities . they both has similar histories and geographies . But why did only one of them generate a significant rescue package .
The geography of vulnerability production and the geography of vulnerability are very different. If the crisis in Central America was production by many people and organizations over a long period of time and across many countries, then the effects of the crisis were felt by a concentrated group of people in a handful of countries.
