Genre is a type or class of literary work, like novels, poetry, plays, and short stories. These are classified according to the form, method and function used. For example, some of the obvious differences are: the novel is written in prose, and uses narrative techniques like third person narration and first person narration. In the third person narrative, the writer tells the story from outside, and in the first person narration, a character tells his/her own story. In poetry, we use poetic devices like ****phors, and rhyme. In plays, the action is carried along by the actors who tell the story through their dialogues. All these genres may have sub-genres. Thus, there are many types of novels, like detective, the novel of education or bildungsroman, the gothic novel, the romance, and the realist novel, which forms the first major part of your course. These sub-genres are explained below.

Hybridization = Blending of voices

How different genres can interact within a single work?
Bakhtin devised the concept of 'dialogic form' to describe navels where a medley of competing 'voices' interrupt but do not silence one another. His term for blending voices or genres is Hybridization.

Romance and realism


هذه النقطة من أهم النقاط بنظري وهي تخصص في شرح genre وتعدده


Romance


هي نعم تعني ان هنالك قصة حب هذا لا خلاف عليه


ولكن هل فعلا الرواية هي رومانس فقط؟


كما وضحنا اي نوع ادبي يضعنا امام قواعد وتوقعات خاصة منه

ولكن اغلب الاراء الاولى حول الرواية لم تصفها رومانس فقط ولكن ايضا كما في نقطة سابقة وضحنا انها دراما

ولكن هنالك تضارب ما بين realism + romance في الرواية


Romance هنا كما وضحته لكم ما شمل ما هو خارج حدود الواقع


واغلب روايات القرن التاسع عشر كانت روايات واقعية وهو ينطبق على على هذه الرواية ايضا

فلذلك قد يطلب منا شرح كيف ان الرواية متعددة الانواع او يختص بالسؤال عن نوع محدد


How can Wuthering Heights be read as a romance?


الرواية رومانس لاسباب عديدة كما وضحنا كونها تحكي قصة حب وايضا انها من صنع الخيال وليس حقيقة واقعة


- Wuthering Heights is a romance because it is a love story; or because it is a work of imagination
- The notion of 'romance' came, during the Romantic period, to describe works of introspection and imagination.
- At its most fundamental level, the term 'romance' is used as a synonym for the term 'novel' and generally denotes a mode of writing that engages with the desires and imaginative lives of its characters and readers.



امر اخر مهم وهو ان الرواية gothic وهو ايضا يندرج مع romance


وهو ما وجد في شخصية هيثكليف وما تحتويه من عنف ورعب ومكان بعيد عن البشر فلنقل والعواصف والاشباح ايضا

- Wuthering Heights also has strong connections with Gothic romances over and beyond the Gothic characteristics of Heathcliff. Gothic novels cultivated an atmosphere of terror, using remote and rugged settings and a paraphernalia of storms, shadows, apparitions and portents.

المحيط النفسي والجسدي كتأثر بما يحدث على ازابيل وكاثرين هو قوثيك ايضا ولكن يرى ايضا من ناحية الفيمنزم على انه يصور وضع المرأة في المجتمع الابوي (مجتمع ذكوري فلنقل المراة فيه مهمشة ولها دور معين ومحود اسير في المنزل)
- Isabella and the young Catherine's incarceration at Wuthering Heights is reminiscent of this aspect of the Gothic, and feminist criticism has firmly established modes of reading the genre as expressive of the physical and psychological oppression of women within patriarchal society.

ومع ذلك يوجد اختلافات فلنقل بين رواية ايميلي برونتي واختها شارلوت ايضا وبين قوثيك

· Gothic heroines are usually virtuous and passive, not major characteristics of Catherine Earnshaw.
· Instead of the expected feminine contrast to Heathcliff's savagery, readers encountered a recalcitrant heroine who, like the other residents of Wuthering Heights, is no model of refined behaviour.
· 'Her heroines scratch, and tear, and bite, and slap", who drew attention to the ways in which the human inhabitants of Wuthering Heights are constantly described in the same animalistic language as Heathcliff's dogs, forever fighting and devouring food.
· None of the female charactersmeets expected standards for a romantic heroine, and more than they serve as ideal domestic role models.




- In Wuthering Heights she brings together the romance elements of genres such as the Gothic with unapologetically realistic depictions of character, dialogue and behaviour.


The critic George Henry Lewes:
- In Wuthering Heights, there is a combination of heightened de******ion and a telling engagement with real issues and emotions, which is the basis for the realist novel's claim to 'truth'.

هنا قضية كون الرواية رواية واقعية


('Realism'is the name generally given to novels that aim to provide a faithful rather than idealised portrayal of life. The term can be variously defined and novels can achieve realist effects using a wide range of literary techniques.)
· The brutal truths which Wuthering Heights presents include the realities of domestic life, social exclusion and economic dispossession.A combination of romance and realismis also characteristic of Charlotte Bronte's Jane which also engages with domestic politics (in both the familial and the national meanings of that phrase).


· In this respect, Wuthering Heights can be linked with other novels more obviously concerned with what was termed 'the condition of England', particularly those dealing with the plight of homeless, displaced children, like the 'foundling novel'.


- Lewes's appreciation of the 'truth' of Bronte's novel included the conviction with which we accept Heathcliff's 'burning and impassioned love for Catherine, and ... her inextinguishable love for him'
- The final scene between Catherine and Heathcliffin the novel is full of violently eroticized language. However, faced with a novel in which the only scene of physical passion occurs when the heroine is heavily pregnant and on the point of death, most film-versions eroticise the childhood love between Catherine and Heathcliff instead, supplying adolescent trysts on the moors in order to meet our own expectations of what romance should be.

مثلا في البداية كان النقد كله على شخصية هيثكليف وانها المسيطرة على الرواية ولكن هؤلاء ركزو على الشخصيات النسائية في القصة

وكل يوم ابتداء من باجر بضيف لكم الشرح العربي (جابتر 6 و 7 و 8)


جابتر 8 لخصته بدون لا اعرف شالسالفة

بس المهم كان واضح:

بعد توسع الامبراطورية البريطانية وصار فيه احتكاك وهجرات مع ثقافات ثانية. صار فيه قلق تجاه الهوية البريطانية (واوروبا بشكل عام) من ناحية المعتقدات والعادات الاجتماعية هالشي ظهر في الروايات الثلاثة

رواية جزيرة فاليسا
ثقافيا ممكن نقول التأثر بالملبس والطعام والدين (أي التقاء حضاري واحد يؤثر على الثاني)

المهم ان بطل القصة تزوج وحدة من الباسيفك وانجب منها واعتبر الجزيرة هي (HOME) وان موطنه الام مجرد ارض البيض

ممكن نلاحظ (CASE) البطل ما قدر يتبين شنو هويته بالضبط رغم انه يتكلم انجليزي.

· The expansion of the British empire, the sharp rise in emigration and immigration, the new trades in goods and commodities, industrialisation, urbanisation, and the rise in literacy - all these factors profoundly affected how the Victorians thought about home and abroad as the nineteenth century progressed.
· We might like to assume that the Victorians had fixed certainties about what home represented: a refuge from the world of work, a haven from the political upheaval of Continental Europe and the conflicts of empire, a fit environment for women to bring up children, a space to display the new goods and values of the middle class.
· Drawing upon the Gothic novel and ideas of the uncanny, Bronte's Wuthering Heights demonstrates that the family home can be a site of emotional upheaval, trauma and profound disquiet. For Bronte, home is a site of haunting and retributive violence rather than comfort and security
· Doyle's The Sign of Four shows that the domestic world of Victorian London is riven with violence; with the exception of Tonga's death on the Thames, all the deaths that take place in London occur within the confines of private residences. The science of detection is used by Holmes to defend the security of Victorian families in their homes, but the unearthing of the plot displays how this very domestic security is an illusion, beset on all sides by the threats created by British imperial expansion abroad.
· Stevenson's 'The Beach of Falesa' shifts the focus on the idea of 'home' to the unlikely setting of a copra trader's new domestic life with his Polynesian 'wife', Uma, in a home blighted by bad luck and believed to be cursed. Stevenson's engagement with the complicated relationship between home and abroad extended beyond his writing into his personal life.

الرواية تعد رواية واقعية (عن الحياة والشوؤن المنزلية) في جنوب البسيفيك. وتعبر عن العلاقة المعقدة ما بين home و abroad

Reading 'The Beach of Falesa'

هذه النقطة مهمة تتحدث عن تكوين الرواية الخليط والمتنوع من :

كونها ليست قصيرة لتكون قصة قصيرة ولا بالطول الذي يمكن اعتبارها من خلاله كرواية. لذلك هي تسمى نوفيلا(( رواية قصيرة : قصة قصيرة طويلة))

أيضا تنوعا من حيث كونها:

Romance + realist at the same time (mixture)

A hybrid form

· 'The Beach of Falesa' is best defined as a novellaor a short novel.
· It is a hybrid form-too short to be considered a novel, too long to be a short story.
· The unfamiliarity of the topic and the foreign words in the tide necessitated the addition of a subtide ('Being the Narrative of a South-Sea Trader') to make the story understandable to a mass British readership.
*** 'The Beach of Falesa' is a hybrid work not only because it is too short to be a novel and too long to be a short story, but also because of its content: it mixes realism with more romantic and poetic modes; it even gives a central place to the supernatural.

اللغة زاخرة وبقوة بالتصوير المرئي لجمال العالم الطبيعي يعني يخبرنا المشهد الذي يراها بكل دقة وجمال

· His language is full of strongly visual imagery conveying the beauty of the natural world: the 'broad and bright' moon, the pink dawn, and 'the daystar [that] sparkled like a diamond'.

استخدم حواسه لاعطاء انطباعه الاول عن الجزيرة

· Wiltshire engages all his senses in describing his first impressions of the island:the smell of the 'wild lime and vanilla', the cool temperature of the breeze blowing in his face, the prospect of hearing new words in a 'tongue [that] would be quite strange to me' (p. 3).
بهذه الطريقة استطاع ستيفنسون جعل القراء يتفاعلون مع المشهد وتخيله كأنهم موجودين مع الراوي
· Stevenson's opening paragraph sets the scene for his British readers, encountering this story about the Pacific on the other side of the world. He draws in his readers by letting them see Falesa for the first time as Wiltshire does, through the perspective of his first-person narration.

In his deployment of such poetic language in the opening paragraph, Stevenson is capturing as closely as possible the magical first encounter so many visitors to the South Pacific have related in fiction, travel writing, correspondence and memoirs.

ومن هنا نلاحظ ان القصة بدأت رومانسية ولكن بعد ذلك صور لنا احداثا حقيقة وهي ما يلقاه الزوار من مشاكل ومعضلات في ذلك المكان من خلال تجارب التجار السابقين
This opening section of the story draws the reader in through the romance of the first encounter with a Pacific island, and then presents us with a realist account of the problems of previous foreign traders on Falesa.Stevenson draws upon the adventure romance and travel writing traditions and the expectations of his readers before showing them the reality of life on Falesa, which, despite its beauty, is far from being an exotic island paradise.
الكاتب هنا وضع البداية وفقا لتصورات القراء من ناحية ان تكون القصة روامنسية وعن (خيال المغامرات) وهو ما يختص بأدب الرحلات كونه يعيش في جزيرة فعلا في البسيفيك ولكن نراه بعد ذلك يظهر حياة واقعية للحياة في فيليسا التي على الرغم من جمالها فهي أبعد من كونها جزيرة غريبة.

A new realism

فعلى الرغم من وجود امور فوق العادة مثل
the taboo around Wiltshire's house, and the islanders' belief in Tiapolo or the devil),
الا ان القصة وضعت لتكون واقعية
Despite the fact that the plot of 'The Beach of Falesa' deliberately uses the supernatural,Stevenson's narrative deals with these phenomena in a realist fashion.

فعلى الرغم من كون الجزيرة غير حقيقة في (عالمنا) وانها من خيال الكاتب ولكن الكاتب من خلاله تصويره لها والحياة فيها ومالمعتقدات وغيرها لقاطنيها اعطاها ميزات حقيقة من خلال حياته التي قضاها في جزيرة ساموون التي عاشرها بشكل يومي
While Falesa is an imaginary island, Stevenson took great pains to make his representation of island life as accurate as possible, basing many of the attitudes, practices, beliefs and aspirations of the islanders on the Samoans whom he interacted with on a daily basis.

من النقاط التي تختص ايضا بكون القصة واقعية هو استخدام اللهجة dialect الخاصة باهل الجزيرة للتفاهم مع التجار الانجليزي
There are two other aspects of realism in Stevenson's story the use of dialect in the narrative, and the circulation of books.

New forms of English

هذه اللهجة تعتبر نوع من انواع اللغة الانجليزية تستخدم في اماكن لا يتحدث سكانها بهذه اللغة وهي خالية من النحو مجرد كلمات للتفاهم والتعاون التجاري

- Stevenson's use of dialect and slang
- Stevenson's story attempts realistically to represent a new, evolving, and still unstable dialect of English, broadly called Pidgin, which emerged as a new language out of the trading relationships on the beach between different communities (Europeans, Americans, Chinese, various Pacific islanders) across the Pacific.

مثالا على ذلك استخدام اوما زوجة راوي القصة لهذه اللهجة للتواصل والتفاهم مع زوجها
Lacking a language in common, Uma uses the English-based island Pidgin trading language to communicate with her husband, Wiltshire.

من خلال وصفه للحياة العائلية لكلا من ويلتشاير و اوما فان القصة بدلت مابين مفهوم

Home + abroad

Linguistically, in this depiction of the domestic life of Wiltshire and Uma, 'The Beach of Falesa' swaps the categories of home and abroad for its Victorian British readers.

· the complications of Wiltshire's home life.

· Stevenson's commitment to realism is at its clearest here in its depiction of an everyday marital argument.
دعم اوما لزوجها واتباعها له يوضح ان زواجهم ليس مجرد ورقة قانونية ولكن ايضا روحي
Uma's unconditional support for Wiltshire, and demonstrates their marriage in the spirit as well as the letter of the law.

الرواية توضح لنا الرباط بين الامبراطورية (الاستعمارية) و التجارة . هذا الرباط كما تظهره حياة ويلتشاير و اوما العائلية فأن له مشاكله و ايضا فرصه. من هذه المشاكل الخلط بين الاعراق وتهميش القيم البريطانية (عاداتهم) والقناعات نتيجة لذلك.
'The Beach of Falesa' reminds us of the increasing interconnectedness brought about by trade and empire. This interconnectedness, as Wiltshire and Uma's domestic life shows, brought with it problems as well as opportunities. Chief among these perceived problems was the prospect of the mixing of the races and the dilution of British values and certainties that may occur as a result.
