Color plat 39~the Lictors returning to Brutus the bodies of his sons ~ *A/neoclassical style*B/ republican symbol* C/and it is telling story about: Brutus' sons: the Lictors returning to Brutus the bodies of his sons"………………………………. 1/the Analysis of the painting : this is my analysis …………………………………………... On the left of the painting there is 2 bodies of the Brutus's did sons on the litter, and anxious group of female on the right represent Brutus' wife and her 2 daughters, the poses expression of the female group show their intense awareness of some tragic event , and the case of tallest woman ,conflicting desires to rush toward the procession and to support the younger girls, her expression answered by that litter bearer. On the middle ground there are chairs and table and sewing basket on the table. On the extreme right is a servant who head her face and in the lift back ground is lictors . they carried (fasces-axe) a symbol of magistrates power and law and order, we see lictors carrying the bodies of Brutus' died sons killed by his own order in his capacity as magistrate .*( Brutus's sons had attempted to overthrow the government and restore the monarchy, so Brutus ordered their killed in his" capacity as magistrate" to maintain the republic, Thus, Brutus was the heroic defender of the republic, at the cost of his own family). Brutus sits on the left, alone, brood and grim expression on his face , hold in his hand a letter ,his meditative expression seems to remove him even further from the immediate action, he sits beneath statue which represents Rome. the whole of scene which painted by David in his painting takes place inside a building which the columns and floor tiles resemble those of ancient Rome as do the costumes. We can see how the painting relates to a period of Roman history in which, according to the traditional, a republican form of government used magistrates and respect for the law to replace the power of autocrats……………………………………………………………… 2/the perspective lines: the perspective lines of the painting- created by the lines along the tiled floor the bricks in the walls and the tops of the columns and how they converge at a point close to the left shoulder of the tallest woman the horizontal line on which this point occurs is the horizon line or eye level. that is the level at which it assumed our eye will view the scene. this line positioned more than half way up the picture, and suggest that we look directly at the tallest female figure. we are not looking significantly up or down at this scene we are led to see it from height similar to that of the main figures. The picture plane is the horizontal we imagine as the front of the imagined three dimensional space of the painting……………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …… 3/the angle of vision: our angle of vision is such that we seem to be standing parallel to, and looking directly at the main figure groups particularly the group of women on who the perspective line converge……………………………………………………………………………. 4/light an shade: spotlight effect (please study it from the book it is very clear)………… 5/colour : (please study it from the book page:128) focus on spotlight wish mentioned to it in page 129 and colour temperature in page 130 *Light and shade: page 129 ..we can see that light and shade are used as a means of suggesting 3-dimention volume look at the folds of drapes at shadows on hands, arms and feet..you can see how David EXPLOITS this technique of suggesting (depth and valume). 6/Historical looking : (This is very important ) First of all the content and caption of David's painting tell us that he is drawing on classical story about Brutus and his sons the story of Brutus was popular to educated section of the French public throughout the 18th century as David who were well acquainted with ancient Greek and Roman thought and literature( this kind of knowledge was Enlightenment) choice of a specific episode in the Brutus story was significant ( the Brutus story which was relates to a period of roman history in which, according to the traditional, a republican form of government used magistrates and respect for the law to replace the power of autocrats)….the date of the painting 1789 was also significant this was the year of political upheaval leading and "declaration of the right of man and citizen" it seems tempting in the circumstances to forge a link between political events in France in 1789 and pro- republican sentiments implicit in David's painting particularly in view of its timing. David also invented in his painting ~the return of the sons' bodies to the family home, this brings to the fore conflicting between( political duty and family allegiances) ~represented for many generation of roman's European in the Brutus example(no mercy to traitors were they were our friends, our brothers our CHILDREN, look only to their crimes!!* Brutus's sons had attempted to overthrow the government and restore the monarchy, so Brutus ordered their killed in his" capacity as magistrate" to maintain the republic. Thus, Brutus was the heroic defender of the republic, at the cost of his own family…………………………………………………………… In 1789, for David to bring up such a subject was seen as revolutionary and hotly controversial, there is little evidence that David had any particular allegiances before he completed the Brutus there is, however, plenty of evidence of the political views he held after Salon of 1789.the painting reveals how deeply committed the artist was to the new ideas and enlightenment principals. Indeed, had the revolution not occurred, this picture would doubtlessly could never have been exhibited publicly. after the first public exhibition of the Brutus David was treated as hero. Irrespective of his intention in the painting its implicit a association with the events of 1789. David's picture was seen as a republican manifesto, and greatly raised David's reputation…………………………………………………………………………………………………… 7/Cultural resonances in David's art: explore a painting in term of the social ,cultural ,or moral values: (values of society in which it produced) David ,as artist ,simply acted as vehicle for expressing such a view (on political liberty) in visual form David's Brutus as a representation of a kind of political heroism or duty in which the best interests of society are put before those of individuals.. please read the discussion in the top of page 144.. هنا بينت العلاقة بين لوحة ديفيد وبين جنرال ويل تبع نظرية روسيو هذا النقطة مهمة لان بعض الأحيان بيسألو عن العلاقة بين لوحة ديفيد ونظريات وروسيو انتبهوا لهاذي النقطه. 8/The Texture of the painting's surface(brush work): thin and smooth……………........................ |
