Task 4

• Investigation seen across the four BNC registers

Verb Phrase Register
Academic Conversation Fiction News
Is seen 41 0 1 13
Are seen 30 0 10 10
Was seen 30 0 10 10
Were seen 24 0 6 10
Can be seen 83 0 1 1
Could be seen 6 0 8 0
May be seen 26 0 0 1
Might be seen 4 0 0 0

We can note that all of the above verb phrases are used more frequently in Academic register rather than fiction and news registers. On the other hand these words seemed to disappear in the conversation register. If we keep on mind that all of these verbs phrases could be used for passive voice, it might be helpful to refer to LSWE corpus ( Biber el al., 199 , Dection 113) , which describe the academic register as having the greatest frequency of all types of passive construction and conversation as having by far the least. The main aspect to consider is what the writer or speaker chooses to put first in the clause. In spoken text, the speaker is presenting his/her perspective; also the speaker is usually the doer. The active voice is therefore the dominant choice. But, in written text the author/writer is usually recounting events or telling us new news ,where mostly the listeners/reader will be interested on the event itself rather than on the "doer".

We may also refer to the lack of modality in the conversation, fiction and news registers to the fact that these registers deal with specific events and specific times, events that can be tracked back to specific date because they are published in the record. For example, parliamentary decisions , in the case of news , are recorded carefully for all to look up. With clear evidence to justify statements being made, the writer doesn't have to express any uncertainty in news or fiction registers. Also, in conversation the speaker is usually talking about himself/herself and might uses face gestures or the shared knowledge between two speakers. The speakers usually don't have to express any uncertainty in a conversation

British National Corpus

ويسلم راسج
