تلخيص المقال من ملف فرع الاردن

Perspective and Point of View in The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Carole Scott.

The apparently straightforward The Tale of Peter Rabbi looks like the Victorian Edwardian nature- boy story with appropriate moral ending.



The story itself may be relatively simple, the complexity of the narrative perspective and point of view epitomizes the multiple levels of apparent and covert ideologies, values, attitudes, biases, and hypocrisies that the era sustained and toward which Potter`s own ambivalences are apparent.



Mackey states that on the surface Potter is clearly on the side of law and order but the detached tone with which Potter describes Peter`s disobedience function to raise the question of whose side she is on, this important question deserves attention, it raises the techniques and forms of communication that Potter employs to convey ambivalent perspectives and leads us to examine the nature and role of her protagonist.



Moralistic overtones pervade the book`s verbal narrative and that only adults` words are recorded as spoken- we never hear from Peter or his sisters.
The inherent discord or disharmony between moral stance and affect gives energetic life to the plot.
The techniques Potter uses to manipulate her reader to identify with Peter and the characteristic of this unlikely hero will form the focus of this essay.



Narratologists, those who study stories and narratives to frame an analysis of a narrative text, interest with viewpoints from which a story is told, categorizing the relationship between author and his narrative voice or vices, de******ion, dialogue, characters and events.



The complexity of narrative perspective is multiplied in picture books and with perspectives that add dimension to the reader`s experience.



The dynamic is in interaction between verbal and visual perspective and point of view deepens the reader`s involvement in comprehension of the story.


Narrative voice of the verbal text may be ambiguous, the illustrations are clear with different interpretation.


The naming is foreshadowing of the next double spread, where both image and words transform the rabbits into clothed creatures capable of human speech.
The narrative voice of verbal text is objective, focalizes, choice of words to reduce the drama and intensity.



“leaving his jacket behind him” as different interpretation about image , transformation from name to nameless- from human to animal.



It is clearly that of the powerful class and paternalistic authority of which Mr. McGregor is representative.



The conflict takes place between Mr. McGregor and Peter, between fixed order society and the forces that seek to undermine it, between who have and who want, between human civilization and animal nature, Mr. McGregor is the rules.



Peter enters the garden because he will not accept restraints to his freedom. For this he is willing to risk danger, the loss of the clothes that makes him more human but hamper his liberty of movement.




The socio-political message of the verbal text is counted by the individualistic stance of the pictures.



Potter`s balance of text and picture involves a variety of functions, disharmony in focalization between words and picture.



Verbal text focalizes on Mr. McGregor but illustration focalizes on peter.



Other technique shows a reversal of the more common picture-text combination in which the illustration carries the drama of the action in contrast to the verbal text`s diffident or tangential discourse. The words carry the action and the affect while illustration provides the diversion, p 31-2. focuses on the robin-bird.


The perspective about the protagonist is rebellious figure challenging authority an established order, fore-grounding. P 111 in reader 2, talks about Potter and Milton.
Potter`s tale, recognizes the division in our culture between the domestic sphere and public world where power is situated, and recognizes the perceived division between humans and animals, p112-Reader 2, traditional hero character.



Potter is completely breaking the mold of the hero in this story, for Peter is small, frightened, emotionally driven, not very rational animal. Male, he is no heroic representative of the “innate superiority of civilized, rational, male order against wild, emotional, female chaos”



The tale is subversive the period`s premises and expectations of what it takes to be good child, obedient, dutiful, respectful of authority, social mores, and hero genre together with implicit values, whereby the reader is required to admire courage, action, skill and determination, while qualities like creativity, sensitivity and self-questioning have no presence in the hero`s world, Potter`s polite, socially correct narrative voice is revealed as façade, shielding the author from self-revelation.




Potter has laid depth charge beneath the calm surface of innocent children`s story. Her tale provides explosive force for many generations of children, encouraging them to self-indulgence, disobedience, transgression of social boundaries and ethics, and assertion of their wild against civilized living. This battle will be a constant, cyclical one.



The straggle for personal independence will include moments of panic and terror, and real danger. But subliminal message is that this struggle is what life is all about and the price one must pay, stomachache and no supper, is well worth the exhilaration and self-realization that results from the confrontation.
